Thoughts on Family Literacy
by Barbara Bate, Family Literacy Consultant

Prior to 1996, B.C. lagged in family literacy activity compared to the other western provinces. In the last two years that picture has changed dramatically. With over 20 cost- shared projects and numerous other forms of family related activity, family literacy is finally a part of the BC literacy landscape. The major challenge we face now is keeping the current level of family literacy programming while continuing to develop new programs. This is not a simple task, but it is one which we must face together as a province.

Current growth in family literacy is due largely to the efforts of the regional coordinators who work together with their colleges, and with Literacy BC to bring family literacy to their communities. Because of their belief in family literacy, and expertise at developing community partnerships, family literacy programs have sprung up throughout the province. Most family literacy programs now have their own coordinators.

With Jean Rasmussen of Literacy BC as the Provincial Family Literacy Project Coordinator, a family literacy team is in place from the provincial to regional to community levels. To make family literacy a permanent part of B.C.’s literacy activity, this team needs an infrastructure which provides some level of financial support. Without it, energy and commitment would eventually wane, and gains made to date lost.

There are a number of ideas to explore. One idea might be to organize “Friends of Family Literacy” groups. The purpose of the groups at the provincial, regional and community levels would be to support family literacy programs. Group membership could be an interesting question. Enlisting the support of community members — people new to family literacy — is a possibility. Since family literacy partners and people in government positions are faced with their own priorities, attracting a new group to family literacy may have merit...something to think about. We shall continue to work toward ensuring a future for family literacy. We have come this far...
