Come to the Provincial Literacy Forum

Next month's provincial forum in Victoria includes a lineup of workshops designed to appeal to practitioners, employers and others interested in the challenges and innovations of literacy in B.C.

Literacy: Investing in our Future, features topics ranging from parenting skills, workplace training and research, to the media, the Net and electronic conferencing. The two-day event is hosted by Project Literacy Victoria and sponsored by the National Literacy Secretariat and the Ministry of Education, Skills and Training (MOEST). It takes place November 28-29 at the Ocean Pointe Resort.

Participants can choose from over 20 workshops in four sessions, including:

Literacy and Learning at Work: Practical Strategies for Employers
Examines successful and unsuccessful training of low literacy employees. Presented by Janis LaCouvee, Techniques Employment Services (Victoria) and Maryse Neilson, Learning Disabilities Association of B.C. (Victoria).

Electronic Conferencing
Showcases the current electronic networks in B.C. and Canada, with Sandy Middleton of Literacy B.C. and Peter Goulding of AlphaCom, the Ontario literacy on-line network.

Introduction to the Internet
Explores the capacity and usefulness of the World Wide Web and its applications to literacy work, with B.C. librarian Thomas Qulgley and Charles Ramsey from the National Adult Literacy Database (NALD).

Family Literacy
A panel will discuss family literacy initiatives in different regions of B.C., moderated by Barbara Bate, University College of the Fraser Valley.

The Media Project: An Attempt to Harness the Power of TV
Reg McNamara, an instructor from the University College of the Cariboo (UCC), presents a "show and tell" with video and printed materials from this project partnered by UCC and two Kamloops media outlets.

Nearly All You Want to Know About the Adult Literacy Cost-Shared Program
with Audrey Thomas, Project Officer, Developmental Programs (Literacy and ABE), MOEST; and Yvette Souque, Program Consultant, National Literacy Secretariat, Human Resources Development Canada.

From the Inside Out: Reading and Writing Poetry with Adult Learners
Vicki Grieve, University College of the Fraser Valley, explores the interplay between poetry and literacy instruction.

Motivation: Values, Work and Disabilities
Margaret Raymond from Project Literacy West Kootenay discusses the implications of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS/FAE) for literacy programming.

An open forum where conference participants choose their own topics for discussion follows the final session.
