| Canada Post Literacy Awards ...
The annual Canada Post Literacy Awards were announced on September 7. The awards celebrate the achievements and successes of individuals and organizations and recognize their successful efforts to improve their literacy skills or help others achieve their literacy goals. BC awards were presented in two categories, Community Leadership and Individual Achievement. READ Society The READ Society was founded on the belief that literacy and language are essential to a healthy community. Now approaching its 25th anniversary, READ provides programs, including adult basic skills and ESL services, for learners of all ages and offers additional support for children through its Bursary Fund. Frances Thorsen, Executive Director, and Vicky Austin, Bursary Fund Manager accepted the award on READs behalf. The $2000 cheque and certificate were presented by Bob Taylor, Manager of Corporate Communications, Canada Post, and Linda Mitchell, a former READ Executive Director. Speaking on behalf of READ, Vicky says, The award acknowledges the dedication and resolve of READ teachers, staff, board members and volunteers over the past 25 years. READs commitment has always been to help students learn. The Certificate of Achievement is proudly displayed in the hallway at READ and the $2,000 cash award will provide tuition for a child to attend READs KEY classes for academic achievement. |
