... Literacy Action
Day
Literacy BC was represented at Literacy Action Day (LAD)
on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, October 25. Despite the pressing issues facing
our federal government, it was encouraging that the more than 70 LAD delegates
received a warm welcome, meeting with 80 MPs and Senators throughout the
day.
The BC delegation included Wayne Cunningham, Laubach Canada;
Angie Oman, a Kamloops Laubach literacy student; Ellen Szita from our Board,
and Linda Mitchell and Sandy Middleton from Literacy BC staff. We had very
interesting and informative meetings with The Honourable David Anderson,
Minister of the Environment, and Gurmant Grewal, MP Surrey Central. We also met
with senior staff for The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, MP Vancouver South -
Burnaby; Werner Schmidt, MP Kelowna; Keith Martin, MP Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca ;
Chuck Cadman, MP Surrey North; and The Honourable Hedy Fry, MP Vancouver Centre
and Secretary of State (Multiculturalism, Status of Women).
