A long time adult basic education instructor known to many people in the B.C. literacy field has died in Castlegar. Friends and colleagues at Selkirk College were saddened by the loss of Carlton Scott know to all as Scotty as a result of an accident in September. Scotty was born in Arkansas City, Kansas. He earned a B.Sc. in Biology/Education from Utah State University, followed by a M.Sc. in Science Education and Plant Physiology from the University of Montana in 1965. He immigrated to Canada in 1971. After he settled in Trail in the mid-1970s, he joined the faculty of Selkirk College as an ABE and Biology instructor at the Trail Campus. He later worked with Selkirks International Education Department and was instrumental in developing the telecommunications curriculum project in 1992. In 1994, he assumed responsibility for the delivery of the Selkirk College Home Study program. He became interested in the Internet and the world wide web as a delivery medium for distributed learning, and voluntarily became the colleges webmaster, overseeing the development of the college website. It was a role that he found stimulating and challenging. During his years at Selkirk College, Scotty was a valued and respected colleague, and received two Meritorious Service Awards. Among his personal interests were boatmaking, woodworking, canoeing, cycling and gardening. Scotty served for two years as regional representative for the Selkirk region on the board of the Adult Basic Education Association of B.C.(ABEABC). Former ABEABC President Patty Bossort, also a friend and colleague, says its very sad and very tragic. His loss has affected us all. He was an energetic guy who did a lot of creative thinking with distance ed and computer education. He was very thoughtful and very helpful to everyone. He certainly did touch a lot of people around the province.
