Ten Legends Workbook:
Ojibwa and Iroquois Legends

This workbook focuses on the culture and legends of the Ojibwa and Iroquois people of northern Ontario. It is produced by the United Native Friendship Center Literacy Program in Owen Sound, Ontario.

Ten Legends Workbook is an excellent workbook for beginning readers. It presents ten of the Ojibwe and Iroquois legends with appropriate follow-up activities. Each story is followed by exactly the same types of activities; specifically there are fill-in-the-blanks, a cloze exercise, a vocabulary exercise, a word search, and a word jumble. This kind of repetition can be reassuring to beginning readers because there is a predictable pattern to what is being asked of them. It might also be viewed as tedious for more advanced readers, so I would always encourage students to choose the exercises which appeal to them most. The answer key for all of these exercises is included in the back of the book.

The legends were well received by all the students who reviewed them. One of the reasons is that they are the kind of stories that can be enjoyed by all ages. One student said, “My daughter would enjoy this. I’m going to read it to my kids.” These stories are an appropriate resource to promote family literacy and cultural awareness. Many students wanted to know if there are other similar volumes written by other First Nation's groups across Canada. Indeed, one student suggested that a copy of Ten Legends with an application for funding should be sent to every band office in North America. What a valuable collection of information and stories that would be!

This book is exceptionally well presented. The print size, content, art work and general page layout make it very attractive, and it certainly is a welcome addition in our classroom. It would be an valuable resource in a regular literacy classroom, learning center or one-to-one tutoring situation.
