LOOKING FOR WORK... LEARNING THE SKILLS WORKBOOK

Looking for Work...Learning the Skills Workbook uses activities and applications that provide skills for people looking for employment. It has been specially designed for those reading and writing at a basic level, as demonstrated by the generous print size and the use of plain language. Sufficient space is provided for the students' written responses throughout the workbook.

Realistic, interesting stories relate to each of the chapter topics, As one student stated, "I like the stories. They are about things that really happen. I learned new things, and I would tell a friend about the book."

One instructor who has used this workbook in her program feels it is suitable for young and old, and poor to good readers. The wide range of topics makes this workbook beneficial for all adults who are seeking employment. Some of these topics include: setting a job goal, understanding where to look for work, writing a resume and a covering letter, getting ready for a job interview, filling out forms, and finding a literacy program in the community.

Some examples of pages I found very time-saving and appropriate for a job-search include:

  1. checklists for
    • the day before the interview
    • making a good first impression
    • personal skills
    • filling out forms
  2. model examples
    • resume
    • covering letter
  3. sample forms
    • application for a bank account
    • entering a contest
    • registration for a child's school
    • application for employment

Looking for Work...Learning the Skills Workbook is highly recommended as an excellent resource for an employment skills course. As one instructor states, "The whole book identifies literacy as a personal issue, one that should continue after getting work..that's a good perspective to give the student."
