Family Literacy Materials on Electronic File

Sandy Middleton of Literacy BC is developing a literacy electronic network for BC. The network is on FirstClass, an easy to use communications system for Windows and Macintosh. One part of this system is the Family Literacy Conference which began last February for people in BC and elsewhere who have a growing interest in family literacy. As part of her work in family literacy development and communication, Barbara Bate moderates this conference and assists Sandy with posting information. The Family Literacy Conference provides a forum for discussion of family literacy ideas and issues. As well, and more applicable to the Literacy Materials Bulletin, the Conference features an annotated list of Literacy BC's family literacy resources. Such a service provides both knowledge and access to practitioners since the materials are also available for loan. The resources are divided into the five categories shown below. One example is provided under each category:

A Tool For Career Planning in BC: The Job Guide
In 1995 the Province of British Columbia, Ministry of Skills, Training and Labour brought out A Tool for Career Planning in BC: The Job Guide. This book is designed for functional to independent level readers. The jobs that are listed require two years or less of education or apprenticeship training. Learners appreciate the way the jobs are organized into different skill levels within categories as diverse as Construction, Craft Work, Industrial People. The experience of looking through the book, reading about the various jobs and discussing possible careers was enjoyable and informative for students. There are listings of colleges and organizations within BC where additional information and training can be obtained. The Reading and Parenting Program
The Reading and Parenting Program: Strengthening literacy skills through parent involvement was funded by the National Literacy Secretariat and prepared by Garth Greatheart of Project Literacy Victoria. There are delightful illustrations by Norm Choo and Jane Palliser. It is divided into eight sessions for the parents of young children to help them encourage reading and writing in their children and to understand their child's development.
