While the Meter was RunningReviewed by Debbie Booth-Johnson, Instructor This unique little book is bound to bring a smile if not an outright chuckle
to any one who picks it up. It certainly made me laugh as the author shared
the irony and the humour of his life's work. As the title suggests, While
the Meter was Running recounts 48 of the more memorable trips of the author,
Marcel Lefebvre. He was a taxi driver in Ottawa for 30 years. One student
who read the book commented that it was The book is quite small but the print is average size. The stories are short; most are only a page long. There are also a few pen and ink drawings of Ottawa landmarks like the Chateau Laurier Hotel, the National Arts Center, and of course, the Ottawa airport. Marcel Lefebvre has struggled with reading and writing for most of his life. Eventually he did go back to night school and finish his grade 12. Then he was ready to start working on his book. He acknowledges the support of his family and friends, and even a few of his fares who encouraged him to tell his story. While the Meter was Running can be picked up and read in small bits. It would be an excellent addition to any literacy classroom library where students can choose material for a quick read. |
