Managing Stress
This book is designed to help the reader meet three goals: understanding what stress is, identifying one’s own stressors, and learning techniques to manage stress. The reader is given three suggestions to help meet these goals: talk about stress with a friend or family member, keep a journal, or set short-term goals. One student reviewer learned that “you can change your diet to relax your stress.”

The Safe, Self-Confident Child
This book addresses issues of self-esteem and gives suggestions for good parental guidance and modelling. The importance of this in child-rearing is explained by pointing out that self-confident children tend to think for themselves, make safe and appropriate choices, solve problems, and learn good values. One student reviewer said, “I have finished to the book because I am the mother of a 3 year-old, and it can help me out with my daughter. Part 2 is interesting to me because I hope to raise my daughter with good self-confidence.”

About Aids
Rachel from Cowichan says, “They explain how people get AIDS and stuff. They explain to be careful with your sex partner and using a needle. They explain you can’t get AIDS just by touching a person casually. You don’t need to be scared of people with AIDS.”

Women’s Health
A student from Nanaimo says, “This is a good book for women of all ages. It starts with eating, exercise, how to get ready for a doctor’s visit, breast cancer, depression, pms, and getting older.”

About Cancer
This book is about reducing the risk of getting cancer. It also discusses early detection of cancer and describes common tests for cancer. The instructors who used this book in their classrooms said that the students found the information useful when presented with some direction from the instructor and with classroom discussion. Some students found the book difficult to read on their own. Everyone said it was an excellent resource book to have in the classroom.
