Family Literacy Week in Vancouver

Bridging Early Family Literacy with Social Responsibility:
The "Fin's Friends" Character Education Program
7: 00 – 8.30 pm – Alice MacKay Room
Learn about the innovative partnership between the Vancouver Canucks and the public educator sector and why the Fin's Friends Character Education program is leading the way in early literacy and social responsibility curricula in BC classrooms. Find out why it's needed, why it's working, and how to get your school or public library involved. Presented by Jessica Danylchuk (Coordinator, Community Partnerships & Education, Vancouver Canucks and Fin's Friends Program Manager) and Diane Nelson (District Principal, West Vancouver School District, Director, Sentinel Sports Academies and Fin's Friends Author).

Good medicine stories for the whole family. An evening of oral storytelling and readings from the published works of Richard Van Camp, proud member of the Dogrib (Tlicho) First Nations from Fort Smith, NWT. He is author of the novel, The Lesser Blessed, a collection of short stories, Angel Wing Splash Pattern, and two children's books with Cree artist, George Littlechild: A Man Called Raven and What's the Most Beautiful Thing You Know About Horses? His baby book, Welcome Song for Baby: A Lullaby for Newborns is the official selection of the Books for BC Babies Selection Committee.

Bridging cultures and strengthening communities

Keynote Speakers:
Calvin Helin, of the Tsimshian Nation, President of the Native Investment and Trade Association, and author of Dances with Dependency, will talk about the crucial importance of skills for Aboriginal success.
Ian Thomson, Principal Consultant and Director of TEFA International, will relate the positive experiences of the 2020 Communication Trust addressing the Digital Divide through its innovative Computers in Homes project to provide ICT to Maori families.
John Corcoran, author of The Teacher Who Couldn't Read and Bridge to Literacy: No Child - or Adult - Left Behind, will explain the work of his foundation championing small-group and one-to-one tutoring including the use of assistive technology and online tutoring.
Vince Walter, Advisor, Rotary International Literacy Resource Group, will discuss Rotary's increasing ICT focus, in particular the Computer Assisted Literacy Solution, a self-paced and interactive system using networked computers to measurably enhance reading and math skills.

I can sing! I can read! Early literacy in early childhood
a workshop with Peggy Bennett

Peggy Bennett is Professor of Music Education and Director of the early childhood MusicPlay program at Oberlin Conservatory, Ohio. An award-winning teacher, Peggy has presented clinics for teachers around the world and is the author of pedagogical and research articles, co-author of the popular SongWorks books, and contributing editor to the early childhood text SongPlay. Don’t miss this exciting “hands-on” workshop! Young children can fall in love with reading. Singing and simple symbols are springboards for early literacy and confidence with reading. Video examples will illustrate.
