Family Literacy

Literacy BC had a strong presence this fall at two annual events, Word on the Street 2007 and Raise-A-Reader Day.

Word on the Street

Despite rain and a civic workers strike, the annual Word on the Street Book and Magazine Festival attracted a loyal contingent of visitors to downtown Vancouver on the last Sunday in September.

Joining staffers, colleagues and volunteers welcoming visitors to our display this year were staff from the Canucks Family Education Centre and several Literacy BC Board members who had traveled from outside the Lower Mainland to attend our weekend board meeting.

Literacy BC and Word on the Street/Rebus Creative co-hosted the Family Stories Tent, site of a multi-faceted display area shared by a variety of family organizations and services. The tent also featured The Family Stories Project, which distributes journals and other materials to adult learners to record and share their stories at selected learning centres and events throughout B.C. An estimated 500 adult learners and their families are collecting stories, anecdotes, poems, newspaper clippings, photographs and other material over the next few months.
