Correctional Basic Education

On September 18, Literacy BC, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General co-hosted a brainstorming meeting on literacy in the corrections system with representatives from colleges, school districts, government, and correctional facilities. The meeting generated many creative ideas for a cross-ministerial, cross-sectoral initiative to improve opportunities for literacy instruction within the BC corrections system. We expect exciting developments in the future that will build on the momentum created.

School Districts and Literacy: Regional Forums

Beginning in September and continuing through the fall, a number of BC School Districts began holding District Literacy Plan Regional Forums. Literacy BC was represented at the Prince Rupert forum in September by consultant Charles Perrin, and at October Forums in Castlegar and Vernon by Diana Twiss. (Please see our welcome to Diana in our News from Literacy BC section).

In Castlegar, approximately 35-40 people turned out, including representatives from a number of Kootenay-Columbia school districts and community members, as well as Selkirk area Regional Literacy Coordinators Ali Wassing and Margaret Sutherland.

In Vernon, approximately 25-30 school district representatives and community members from across the Okanagan participated, along with Regional Coordinator Leslie Kiehlbauch. More forums are planned during October and November in Quesnel, Campbell River, Chilliwack and the Lower Mainland.
