Coming this Spring - International Adult Learners' Week (IALW) 2008

The Canadian Commission for UNESCO has declared International Adult Learners' Week (IALW) for next year, March 3-10, 2008.

Representatives from national literacy coalitions and federal and provincial governments attended a consultation meeting in Ottawa hosted by UNESCO, earlier this month to lay the groundwork for IALW in Canada. Jean Rasmussen attended the meeting on behalf of Literacy BC.

IALW is designed to:

  • Increase the visibility of adult learning and promote literacy and learning throughout life
  • Reach out and give voice to adult learners, especially those from marginalized groups
  • cooperation among partners in all learning environments at both governmental and non-governmental levels to promote adult learning.

Check the Literacy BC website in early 2008 for information as it develops on events being planned for BC and the province. Though details for the 2008 IALW have not yet been posted, here is the official UNESCO IALW site.

Learners, Tutors, Practitioners: An Invitation

ELMO Reviews - Exemplary Literacy Materials Online Reviews - is a new project to review literacy materials. You can learn more about ELMO Reviews, and sign up to be kept up to date or to be a part of the process here.

To get started, we need your help to develop a small working committee of practitioners, tutors, learners and public librarians who represent various regions and types of programs in the province. Working committee members would, among other things, write mini-reviews of literacy resources. The practitioners on the working committee would also conduct field reviews.

If you, or any learners or tutors in your programs, are interested in learning more about being on a working committee and encouraging reviews of literacy materials, please fill in our online form or telephone/ email Nancy Anderson (Project Coordinator) c/o Literacy BC.
